Statement on 2026 Commonwealth Games
Badminton England is deeply disappointed to receive confirmation that badminton, one of the most popular, inclusive and accessible participation sports in this country, has not been selected to feature as part of a significantly reduced Commonwealth Games programme in Glasgow 2026.
Our England players have enjoyed many memorable successes with inspirational performances on the Commonwealth Games stage over the years.
Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith picked up their second successive silver medal at the Games in Birmingham 2022, Lauren also won silver with Chloe Birch in the women’s doubles, while our men’s doubles pairing – Ben Lane and Sean Vendy – also reached the final to come home with a superb silver medal around their necks.
Sue Storey, CEO of Badminton England, said: “I am truly disappointed to this morning hear the news that badminton will not be a Commonwealth sport in 2026.
“I am CEO of the national governing body and therefore one of badminton’s biggest advocates, however I am also a huge fan of our sport and it is so sad that we will not see shuttles fly in Scotland at an historic event which has given us so many magical badminton moments in the past.
“I am heartbroken for the players who we were all looking forward to watching compete on such a big stage – many of whom have been working incredibly hard to qualify for and peak in time for these Games.
“We will now focus on supporting our athletes, continuing to help them reach their full potential on court. We would like to wish Glasgow 2026 the very best in hosting the Games in 2026 and look forward to the opportunity to bring badminton to the wider world at future Commonwealth Games events.”
