Lane and Vendy reach US Open semi-finals
Ben Lane and Sean Vendy ramped up their Paris preparations by reaching the semi-finals at the US Open.
The top seeds in the men’s doubles draw opened up with a comfortable straight sets win over Luis Armando Montoya Navarro and Trevor Tan before prevailing in a decider against China’s He Chen Cui and Jian Qin Peng.
Three games were also required in the quarter-final against Chinese Taipei’s Lu Ming Che and Kai Wei Tang, Lane and Vendy winning 21-10 in the third – just as they had in the previous round.
That set up a semi-final with fourth seeds Peeratchai Sukphun and Pakkapon Teeraratsakul, who took the opener 21-18.
Lane and Vendy levelled up by winning the second game 21-15 but the Thai pair came through 21-18 in the decider before going on to win the final.
Kirsty Gilmour, the third member of the Team GB badminton squad heading to Paris, made it to the quarter-finals of the women’s singles draw.
The third seed won her first two matches without dropping a game before going down 10-21 21-15 21-10 against Indian seventh seed Malvika Bansod.
Lane and Vendy are set to feature at this week’s Canada Open before heading to Paris.
