Day 2 Evening Session: An unforgettable day for the players as they compete for top spots
The second day of the Africa AirBadminton Championships in Mont Choisy, Mauritius, continued to deliver thrilling action during the evening session. Fans were treated to intense matches in the mixed doubles, men’s doubles, and women’s doubles categories, as players demonstrated their grit to secure victories and progress further in the tournament.
In the mixed doubles category, Mauritius XD-3 secured an impressive 1-0 win against South Africa XD-1, delighting the home crowd. Uganda XD-2 displayed exceptional teamwork and defeated Tunisia XD-3 with a solid 1-0 victory. South Africa XD-2 then claimed a narrow win against Uganda XD-1, finishing 1-0 in a match that kept spectators on the edge of their seats. South Africa XD-3 continued their strong form, defeating Tunisia XD-1 with another commanding 1-0 score.
The men’s doubles matches were equally exciting. Mauritius MD-2 emerged victorious against Comoros MD-1 with a 1-0 win in Group A, showcasing excellent coordination and skill. In Group B, Uganda MD-1 outperformed Mauritius MD-1, earning a 1-0 victory with their quick reflexes and powerful smashes. The South Africa Strikers added another win to their record by defeating Mauritius MD-3 in a competitive match that ended 1-0.
The women’s doubles matches highlighted the perseverance of the competing teams. In Group A, South Africa’s Petite Proteas dominated, defeating Mauritius WD-1 and WD-3 with consistent play and aggressive net control. Uganda WD-1 secured a well-fought 1-0 win against Mauritius WD-2 in Group B. However, their next match saw them lose to Tunisia WD-1, who displayed remarkable composure and teamwork to earn a crucial victory.
After the matches, players shared their thoughts and hopes for the tournament. Amy Ackerman from South Africa expressed her excitement and pride in an exclusive interview with BCA TV. She said, “For a first AirBadminton Championship, Team South Africa is doing really well in the individual championships, and I believe that this new outdoor sport will take a whole new dimension in the coming years. I am extremely glad to be able to form part of this first success, and I hope now that I can create memories by clinching more medals with my fellow teammates.”
Lubega Muzafar from Uganda also shared his joy and fortitude following his team’s strong performances. He stated, “I am extremely happy with my performance and also of my teammates. We are really consistent, and we know our objectives that we set before coming here. Now I only hope that we can go all the way to be able to clinch the gold medal in the event that we are playing.”
