This guy is making news. Not sure if he deserves his own threat yet though :p

Won Junior Olympics in 2014; a young prospect for China with a mature game.

What do you guys think? He has been playing smaller tournaments like the Canada Open where he lost to LCW.

On a side note, do any of you know what Li-Ning racket he uses?

Shi Yuqi is a young up-and-comer. His victories over Kenichi Tago and Lee Dong Keun are noteworthy. Now that he's just been promoted to the CHN National 1st Team which means we should be seeing more of him on the international circuit. I'm looking forward to it.

Later today at the Thaihot CHN Open QFs, he is up against a strong, experienced adversary, Son Wan Ho. Let's see how he fare against him.

He may have lost to SWH but he gave a good fight. Interesting to see what happens at the next meeting between SY and both SWH and LHI. SY can handle a defensive player like LDK but he needs to learn how to beat clever and experienced attacking players like SWH and LHI.
Of all the juniors he is the most promising, a thinking player with talent. Looking forward to his next tournament.

Its very interesting that LHI lost to LDK. So the next time S Yuqi meets LHI he should study
how LDK managed to upstage him in the final.
With SWH its not so easy to just return. One needs the CL type of game where its retrieving and attacking when required as well.
IMHO S Yuqi needs to adopt CLs game of supreme defence and LCWs attacking game which he also has. He would be exciting to watch. He has the talent, physique and court craft to develop into something special. I hope he does and wish him all the best.

The only thing separating him from world class is shot quality and perhaps fitness. Not to say its bad, its just not as sharp as LCW for example and it was evident when he played him at Canada Open. Other than that his strategy and shot choice is solid. He has a great around the head cross-court clip too. His form resembles Lin Gui Pu; perhaps same coach?

Yes they have the same coach when they were still in the 2nd team under Wu Yunyong. Now that they are promoted to the National 1st Team just a couple weeks ago, they have both come under Xia Xuanze, the Chief Coach for the MS 1st Team.

Give XXZ and his assistant coaches more time to work on the game of these two juniors. Hopefully, it won't be long before they start producing commendable results. Btw, the 18-yr-old Lin Guipu last week played at the world juniors while the barely 19-yr-old Shi Yuqi was competing at the CHN Open PSS.

Correct, Shi Yuqi does have some fitness issue as pointed out by his previous coach Wu Yunyong who noticed a number of times it became evident when he started to be erratic usually in G2. In fact, SYQ admitted himself that at the inaugural National Youth Games badminton MS Final after taking G1, he struggled to keep up with Zhao Junpeng's pace and duly lost G2 and the decider to concede the gold medal. Incidentally,at the semifinals, SYQ beat LGP to advance to the final.

Wu Yunyong had commented then that SYQ has good tactical skills but fitness problems while LGP has remarkable stamina but his strokes are somewhat unpolished.

Thanks for this. Looking forward to see him at the Macau Open next month. But do you know when we can see ZJPeng playing? LGP is a big disappointment in the juniors. No improvement at all.

I was surprised too Zhao Junpeng didn't play the WJC nor the CHN Open. Not sure why, maybe personal reasons. Hope to see him competing soon.

SYQ still has a lot of time. Besides, his skill seems to make his opponents work way harder than he does. You can only really see his flaws when he plays much more mature pros. If you watch him play juniors he dominates pretty clearly.

SYQ performed well at his last two tournaments. He is certainly the most promising of the juniors. It would be nice to see G.Kai and ZJP as well.
All the juniors exhibit the CL style of patience and v good defence. It's a good style of play as it needs good stroke play. But I Hope individualism is not frowned upon. And in this extent it's refreshing to see SYQ exhibit a few of this and wrong footing his opponents.
But you must also posses a v good and penetrating smash to create problems as well as the ability to change the pace of the game to unsettle your opponent. This is what the top players do very well

Thanks, I overlooked Zhao Junpeng's age, 19 already. Hope to see more of him on the senior int'l circuit then.

I tend to agree with antssantss that Shi Yuqi is the most promising of the juniors atm.

    Any news on Shi Yuqi?

Such a young talent - I had hoped to see him play more international tournaments.

He's only played one abroad last 6 months, and then he played (and did very well) in China Masters and Chinese Taipei Open.

Has he had any setbacks, lacking results, or is it simply the Chinese team that think he's not ready yet?

Shi Yuqi is enrolled to play the JPN Open SS starting with the qualification rounds in the same group as Xue Song, unfortunately. Next, he'll be playing the KOR Open SS back-to-back.

He is really good, great technique. Even if LCW schooled him in JPN open he could have a chance to win vs any other player in the draw. Now that LCW said he will not play in KOR I hope SYQ can do well.

I'm sure Shi Yuqi will be scrutinizing that humbling defeat to LCW and drawing valuable lessons from it. I think he's smart enough and has the right attitude to work hard and learn to do critical analyses of his shortcomings and weaknesses.

He ought to count himself fortunate to still have the opportunity to be schooled by such a great master as LCW. Wish LCW doesn't withdraw from the Korea Open SS so that , hopefully, Shi Yuqi gets to play him again as they are slated to meet in the QFs, if SYQ gets there (his R1 opponent is Son WH, a tricky proposition).

For a young, up-and-coming, aspiring player like the 20-year-old Shi Yuqi, he must face and overcome many challenges and even suffer a couple of hard knocks if he has what it takes to be among the top few or be the best in the world. When the going gets tough, the tough get going.

Congratulations to SY for winning the French Open. From an aggressive young player he has matured into quite a complete stroke player with great defence and good mental strength. But if you compare the speed of LCW and his attacking play, as well as some of the shots that LHI played in the match there is still a gap. They can punch holes in ones defence with that smash. Of course L.Dan is a master with that stroke. Its a sort of snap wrist shot that has a short preparation and catches the opponent unaware. Its a very useful weapon to have as your opponent will have it in his mind and his game is hampered.
