Dream comes true for Husina Kobugabe of Uganda

The Ugandan Girls Badminton Team is currently making waves as they represent Uganda and Africa at the prestigious Uber Cup in Chengdu, China. Placed in Group C alongside badminton powerhouses Japan, Indonesia, and Hong Kong, the team faces tough competition in their quest to showcase their talent on the global stage.

In their opening match against Japan on Saturday, April 27th, the Ugandan girls faced a formidable opponent in the experienced Japanese team. Despite their best efforts, the Ugandan team lost the tie to Japan with a score of 5-0. Fadilah Shamika Mohamed Rafi, representing Uganda in the first singles match against Aya Ohori, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to compete against world-class players. She highlighted the invaluable experience gained from facing such formidable opponents. “I am extremely grateful and happy to be playing against these type of world class players. This will without no doubt help me in my progression and also to acquire experiences,” she told BCA TV after the match.

The second singles match saw Husina Kobugabe facing off against Nozomi Okuhara, a former world number one player. Although Nozomi secured the victory, Husina expressed her deep admiration and honor at the chance to compete against her idol.

“It is such an honor to be playing with such player and especially a former world number 1. I have always admired Nozomi Okuhara and she was my idol in women’s singles. Today I feel like I want to cry as my dream has become true by playing with my idol,” she shared with BCA TV.

Gladys Mbabazi represented Uganda in the third singles match against Tomoka Miyazaki, where the Japanese team emerged victorious. Despite the loss, the Ugandan team remained determined and focused on their next challenges.

In the women’s doubles matches, Husina Kobugabe and Gladys Mbabazi faced off against Nami Matsuyama and Wakana Nagahara, while Fadilah Shamika Mohamed Rafi and Tracy Naluwooza competed against Rena Miyaura and Ayako Sakuramoto. Despite their efforts, the Ugandan team was unable to secure a win in the doubles matches, resulting in a 5-0 victory for Japan.

  

In their subsequent match against Indonesia on Monday, April 29th, the Ugandan team faced another formidable opponent and unfortunately suffered a 5-0 defeat. However, the team’s spirit and willpower remain unwavering as they prepare for their final match against Hong Kong.

The young Ugandan Girls Team continues to inspire with their courage and determination, representing Uganda and Africa with pride on the global stage. As they face their final match, the team remains focused on giving their best and showcasing their talent in this final group match.
