doubles defeat at the thailand open

There was defeat in the doubles for three England pairs at the Thailand Open with all three duos putting up a fight at the Impact Arena in Bangkok.

Gregory Mairs and Jenny Moore got off to a flying start in the mixed doubles beating Mathias Thyrri and Amalie Magelund of Denmark in straight games.

The duo defeated their Danish opponents 21-16 21-14 within 38 minutes before coming up against a duo ranked over 100 places above them.

The Chinese second seeds Zheng Si Wei and Huang Ya Qiong proved too much of a match for the pair as their run ended in the second round.

Mairs and Moore went down 21-12, 21-15 with Zheng and Huang advancing onto the semi-finals.

There were two pairs competing in the men’s doubles, but both saw their competition end in the first round after a tricky draw.

Callum Hemming and Stephen Stallwood came up against the top seeds Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan 21-19, 21-19 who went on a run to the semi-finals.

The other English duo of Ben Lane and Sean Vendy were knocked out by Lu Chiang Yao and Yang Po Han of Chinese Taipei in a tightly fought contest as Lu and Yang extended their head-to-head record to 3-0.

Lane and Vendy had the early advantage as they went ahead, winning the first game 21-17 before Lu and Yang mounted a fightback, narrowly taking the second game 21-18.

This gave the Chinese Taipei pairing the impetus to pull away in the decider closing out the victory by winning the third game 21-12.
