The theory is to give extra support for top-of-the-frame mishits. Yes, it makes it 5 knots. It is something my old stringer used to do. I don’t see any harm in doing it (only at 20 lbs regardless of the strings’ tension) other than it adds some time and 10cm string.

I also saw in a Yonex stringing team video that some player used to ask for an extra cross on the top because “he can’t keep his racket up.

In the video, Tim was talking about an old Arc 11 where you can quite easily put an extra string in IF you prepare the grommets at the top a bit.
But when doing so you don’t pull on the knot at the top. You add another cross string, so you have 4 knots in the end.

Instead, you are pulling on the knot with the machine and have to change the mounting to add the extra string, which has 5 knots.

And like I said in another thread, if you hit the shuttle that high in the stringbed I recommend you work on your technique.
